How to use this freelance quota calculator

It's very easy. Just tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience as a freelancer:

  1. Indicate if this is your first time registering as a freelancer or if you are already registered.
  2. Indicate if you are currently enjoying or have enjoyed at some other time the reduced rate in your quota.
  3. Enter your estimated monthly income and expenses.

And that's it! As if by magic, this calculator will tell you how much you will have to pay per month for your freelance fee.

How is the freelancer quota calculated?

From 2023, the new self-employed fees are calculated based on the monthly net income of each freelancer. A step in the right direction to make the system fairer.

New self-employed quotas 2023 - 2031

The new government reform covers a period of time that extends to 2031. And in addition, the new quotas defined according to each income bracket will be progressively adjusted, at least, until 2025.

Here you have a table with the value of the quota according to the 15 brackets defined by the reform and the savings (or increase) compared to the quota prior to 2023

What is the contribution base and how is it calculated?

You are probably asking yourself: how can I know what my net income is if I don't always earn the same as a freelancer?Through an estimate of the contribution base. Or what amounts to the same thing: an approximate calculation of the net income you receive per month. Here's how to do the math.Calculation of the contribution base:

  • Gross income forecast (excluding VAT)
  • Fixed and variable expenses
  • Expenses that are difficult to justify
  • Contribution base

Two important clarifications:

  • Bad news: among your fixed and variable expenses you should not consider the self-employed contribution itself - too bad!
  • The expenses that are difficult to justify are an estimate that the government has defined and that you will have to subtract from your contribution base. Its value is 7% for the self-employed.

When you have a clear idea of your contribution base, all you have to do is to look up your bracket in the table above, choose an amount in the table and enter your contribution base.

What other factors affect my freelancer quota?

In addition to your net income, there are other factors that can affect your freelancer quota:

  • If it is your first time registering as self-employed, things change a lot. You will be entitled to the flat rate of 86€ per month for the first year. Not bad!
  • Depending on the autonomous community in which you are registered, you will have access to the Zero Quota: an initiative for new freelancers to pay nothing.
  • There may also be other personal variables that affect your quota, such as gender or degree of disability (among others).
