How can I calculate the tax base of my sales invoice?

Última actualización: October 31, 2024

Correctly calculating the taxable amount of your invoices is a fundamental step to properly filing your taxes.

If you have agreed with your client the total amount of the services you are going to invoice them for, you will need to invoice them correctly, including taxable income, VAT and iRPF if applicable.

We show you here how to calculate the taxable amount of your invoices according to different circumstances and in a simple calculation:

  • When you only apply VAT on your sales invoices, you have to divide the total amount you have received from your customer by 1.21:

Let's take the example that we have to make an invoice with a total amount of 1150 euros:
    Tax base: 1150 / 1.21 =950.41€
    VAT 21%: 950.41 * 21% = 199.59€
    Total invoice: 950.41 + 199.59 = 1150.00€
  • When you have to calculate the tax base for an invoice that contains both VAT and IRPF, where VAT is added and IRPF is subtracted, you have to do the following calculation:

    21% (VAT) - 15% (IRPF) = 6 Divide the total amount by 1.06

Continuing with the previous example of an invoice with a total amount of 1150 euros:
    Taxable amount: 1150 / 1.06 = 1084.91€
    VAT 21%: 1084.91 * 21% = 227.83€
    IRPF 15%: 1084.91 * 15% =162.74€
    Total invoice: 1084.91 + 227.83 - 162.74 = 1150.00€
  • When you only apply IRPF because your activity is VAT exempt, you will first have to calculate the difference between the total and the withholding tax (100 - 15 = 85) so you will have to divide by 0.85:

    Taxable base: 1150 / 0.85 = 1352.94€
    IRPF 15%: 1352.94 * 15% = 202.94€
    Total invoice: 1352.94 - 2024.94 = 1150.00€
