Below, we explain what DigiD is, why you need it, and how it facilitates your interactions with Dutch authorities.

What is a DigiD?

A DigiD is a digital authentication system tied to your Burger Service Nummer (BSN), which acts as your unique identification number in the Netherlands. It’s used to securely log in to a range of government and semi-government platforms. For freelancers, having a DigiD is a must for tasks like:

  • Booking KVK Appointments: You need a DigiD to make an online appointment with the Kamer van Koophandel (KVK) for registering your business.
  • Accessing Belastingdienst Zakelijk: A DigiD is required to log in to the Belastingdienst Zakelijk portal
  • Using Other Government Portals: It’s also used for services like applying for subsidies with the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO) or managing municipal matters.

Why is a DigiD Important for Freelancers?

The DigiD streamlines interactions with Dutch authorities by providing secure and convenient access to essential services, including:

How to Request a DigiD

If you have a valid BSN, follow these steps to apply for a DigiD:

  2. Provide Personal Details: Enter your BSN, date of birth, and postal code.
  3. Receive Your Activation Code: An activation code will be sent to your registered address.
  4. Activate Your DigiD: Use the code to activate your account and create your login credentials.

The DigiD activation code is sent by post to your registered address. This ensures security, as the code is tied to your personal details and registered address. Once you receive the code, you can activate your DigiD online. The process typically takes a few business days, depending on when you receive your activation code by post
