With the implementation of the new self-employed quota system in 2023, contributions are adjusted according to the real income of the self-employed, that is, based on their net profit.
This implies that some months self-employed individuals may pay less than they should, or in other cases, they may contribute more than their earnings.
Now, self-employed individuals must choose a contribution base and the corresponding self-employed quota, taking into account the actual money they earn in a month.
To avoid this situation, you have the possibility to adjust your contribution base periodically, adapting it to the evolution of your business.
How many times and when can I change my self-employed contribution base?
Since 2023 and throughout 2024, it is possible to change the contribution base for self-employed individuals up to 6 times in a single year.
However, these are the deadlines for making any of these 6 contribution base changes:
- From January 1 to February 28: effective change starting March 1.
- From March 1 to April 30: effective change starting May 1.
- From May 1 to June 30: effective change starting July 1.
- From July 1 to August 31: effective change starting September 1.
- From September 1 to October 31: effective change starting November 1.
- From November 1 to December 31: effective change starting January 1 of the following year.
These deadlines ensure that changes are made in an orderly manner and in accordance with current regulations.
How can I calculate my net income?
To know the net income of your economic activity, you must subtract the taxable base of your expenses from the taxable base of your income. This new system is based on having a contribution base and, therefore, a self-employed quota appropriate to the net income of your activity as a self-employed person. To do this, you must first check which bracket you fall into according to your income; you can do this through this Social Security Simulator.
Within the bracket you fall into, you can choose the base you want between the minimum and maximum of that bracket.
