Troubleshooting Mac OS X ID-card & software issues

Last updated: October 15, 2024

If you are having trouble authenticating with your digital ID-card or signing documents digitally in your browser, please go through the following steps:

  1. Make sure that your e-Residency card is activated
You can check the validity of your e-Residency card by entering the number of the document on the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board website.
  2. Insert your card correctly into +ID card reader
+ID is a small smart card reader that you received as a part of your e-Residency starter kit. Connect your ID card reader to your computer and make sure it is installed and running (most card readers have an indicator light for confirmation), then insert your card in the reader. Check out their website for more details on how to use the reader properly:

  3. Use Firefox
There is an issue with Chrome and Safari on Mac computers with newly issued ID-cards that hasn’t been clearly communicated to e-residents. Unfortunately, Mac users are likely to experience problems using e-services with the ID card in Safari and Google Chrome, as these web browsers do not currently support the new EC (elliptic curves) encryption algorithm.

So, to use your e-Residency ID-card on your Mac, you'll need to install and use Mozilla Firefox, or update it if you're already using it.

  4. Make sure you have all the necessary ID-software installed
Close all other applications before running ID-software installation wizards. In order to install the required web browser components, double-click the downloaded file and follow the instructions, an automatic installation process will start. It may take few minutes:

    1. Web browser components for authentication and digital signing

    2. DigiDoc4 Client (common application for Client and Crypto) and Utility

  5. Restart your Mac!

  6. Check the status of your browser plugins
When ID-card software is installed and ready for use, a message that installation was successful is displayed. Make sure that the 2 plug-ins required for digital signing in e-services are allowed in your browser. Instructions regarding these 2 plug-ins can be found here.

  7. Make sure antivirus is not blocking the ID-card software

    1. Click here when using Kaspersky Internet Security

    2. Click here when using ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32

    3. Click here when using Panda Internet Security antivirus

    4. Click here when using Avast AntiVirus 2015

  8. Check whether everything works

    1. Log into Xolo Leap or Eesti.ee and try logging in with your ID card

    2. Identify yourself by entering your PIN1 code

    3. After entering the code your identification is successful

    4. Now you're ready to start using your desired e-services
P.S. For digital signing and payment confirmation you'll need PIN2 code

  9. For Mac OS X 10.11.4 and later versions - 'No readers found'
In case you are getting the error message 'No readers found' - download this ccid smart card reader driver package (ccid-installer.dmg file) and open it by right-clicking and choosing 'Open With > Installer' and confirm it by clicking 'Open' once again.

  10. Still having trouble?

    1. Unplug the card reader and the ID-card

    2. Close all your browsers (all tabs) from your dock by right-clicking on the browser icon and choosing “Quit”.

    3. Start over by inserting the ID-card and opening the desired website in Chrome/Safari browser

    4. And in some cases, restarting your Mac will fix everything.

Keychain access vs PIN1
In case you are managing your passwords using Keychain Access and you have it enabled on your Mac while authenticating with your digital ID-card you'll be asked for your keychain password (after selecting your certificate to log in).

  • Use PIN1 instead of your keychain password
